Why Protein Matters More for Diabetics
People with type 2 diabetes often struggle with two things simultaneously: muscle loss and weight management. High blood sugar accelerates muscle protein breakdown, while insulin resistance makes it harder to use carbohydrates for energy. Protein helps on both fronts — it preserves muscle mass and, unlike carbohydrates, does not cause significant blood sugar spikes.
Multiple studies, including a 2024 expert opinion paper in PubMed focused on Indian diabetics, confirm that increasing protein quality and quantity in the diet leads to better glycaemic control, improved body composition, and lower HbA1c over time.
Does Protein Powder Raise Blood Sugar?
High-quality protein powder with no added sugar has a very low glycaemic index and does not significantly spike blood glucose. However, there are important caveats:
- Flavoured powders with added sugar: Many mass-market protein powders contain 5–10g of sugar per serving. These will raise blood sugar and should be avoided.
- Maltodextrin: Often hidden in protein powders as a filler, maltodextrin has a higher GI than table sugar. Check labels carefully.
- Artificial sweeteners: Sucralose and acesulfame potassium are common in diabetic-marketed products. While they do not raise blood sugar directly, some research suggests they alter gut bacteria in ways that affect insulin sensitivity over time.
What to Look for in a Protein Powder if You Are Diabetic
Zero added sugar: The powder itself should have 0–1g of naturally occurring sugar per serving, not added. Check the ingredients list, not just the nutrition label.
High protein per serving: Aim for 20–25g of actual protein. More protein per serving means less room for fillers.
Low carbohydrate: Under 5g of total carbs per serving is a safe target for most diabetics.
Clean ingredients: Short ingredient list, no proprietary blends, no maltodextrin.
Plant Protein vs Whey for Diabetics
Both can be suitable. Plant protein (pea, rice, or yeast) has the added advantage of being lactose-free — important because dairy can trigger inflammation in some diabetics. Yeast protein is particularly noteworthy: it contains chromium, a mineral that plays a role in insulin signalling, and its fermented nature supports gut health, which emerging research links to better glycaemic control.
A Note of Caution
If you are on insulin or blood sugar medication, speak to your doctor before adding protein supplements. Rapid changes in protein intake can affect kidney function in those with diabetic nephropathy. For most type 2 diabetics without kidney complications, a clean protein powder is a safe and beneficial addition to the diet.
